Aldactone vs Demadex

  • Aldactone
  • What is Aldactone

Aldactone (spironolactone) is a prescription diuretic used to remove the excess fluid caused by congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease. It also can be used in combination with other drugs to treat elevated blood pressure, and for treating diuretic-induced low potassium.

  • How does aldactone work

Aldactone works by blocking the actions of a hormone in the body called aldosterone. Aldosterone is a hormone that causes the body to retain water. By blocking it, Aldactone increases the amount of salt and water the kidneys remove from the blood. This extra salt and water is passed out through urine. By increasing the amount of water removed from the blood, Aldactone causes a decrease in blood volume. Because of this effect, the medication can lower blood pressure and also help with water retention.

  • Aldactone dosage

For fluid retention in conditions such as congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or kidney disorders, the usual starting dosage is 100 mg daily either in a single dose or divided into smaller doses. In some cases, your doctor may have you take a daily dose as low as 25 mg or as high as 200 mg.

When potassium loss can't be treated with a potassium supplement, your doctor may have you start with a daily dosage between 25 and 100 mg of Aldactone.

For essential hypertension the usual starting dosage is 50 to 100 mg daily in a single dose or divided into smaller doses.

Demadex (torsemide) is a loop diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt, allowing the salt to instead be passed in your urine. $ 54.60 (Package 10mg x 30 pills)

  • How does demadex work

Demadex acts from within the lumen of the thick ascending portion of the loop of Henle, where it inhibits the Na+/K+/2CI--carrier system. Effects in other segments of the nephron have not been demonstrated. Diuretic activity thus correlates better with the rate of drug excretion in the urine than with the concentration in the blood. Demadex increases the urinary excretion of sodium, chloride, and water, but it does not significantly alter glomerular filtration rate, renal plasma flow, or acid-base balance.

  • Demadex dosage

Congestive heart failure: the standard starting dose is 10 or 20 mg taken by mouth once per day. The maximum dose is 200 mg per day.

Kidney failure: The standard starting dose is 20 mg taken by mouth once per day. The maximum dose is 200 mg per day.

Liver disease: The standard starting dose is 5 or 10 mg taken by mouth once per day. The maximum dose is 40 mg per day.

Hypertension: The usual initial dose is 5 mg once daily. If the 5 mg dose does not provide adequate reduction in blood pressure within 4 to 6 weeks, the dose may be increased to 10 mg once daily.

My review is solely on the side effects I've been experiencing since I began taking Aldactone, 1 week ago. I was prescribed 50 mg, once a day, Spiro for adult acne by my derm. I cannot vouch to whether or not it is helping my acne. As of yet I don't see improvement, however I understand that part takes time. The side effects currently have me at the edge of withdrawing taking this medicine entirely. My side effects have been foggy brained, shakiness, fatigued, spaced out, restlessness, lots of thirst, frequent urinating, unusual heart beat and headaches. I have noticed that if I drink coffee these symptoms are WORSE. Hoping to have some of these side effects lessen or I will have to throw in my towel on Aldactone.

The increase in hair shedding is a normal, Temporary, side effect of Aldactone (spironolactone). As your hormones adjust the shedding will stop. I have been taking aldactone at 25mg daily for about 1 year, and my skin is now completely oil free, and I have noticed a dramatic decrease in the amount of break outs that I get.

I had been using lasix 40mg for a couple of years to control my water retention BUT it caused my blood sodium levels to drop to critical level and put me in the hospital for 11 days, but I'm using demadex now and it works for me with no other problems.

I was prescribed with Demadex (torsemide) to treat my high blood pressure. I live with hypertension since I remember myself and it really affects my lifestyle and my career. With Demadex the quality of my life is much higher as I know that I take a drug that I can rely on and it won't give me up when I do not expect it. Demadex is a life saver for me and I thank the people who have invented this med!
