Propecia vs Avodart

Propecia

  • Propecia
  • What is Propecia

    Propecia is the trade name for the drug Finasteride. It is also used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia in men with an enlarged prostate.

  • How long does it take for propecia to work

    If you are considering taking Propecia for male pattern baldness and have never taken it before, look at Propecia as a long-term treatment and count on up to a year before you notice a difference. It may not take that long, but in some cases it does. As soon as the first day of taking Propecia, production of DHT in the scalp starts being blocked. Within three to six months, users generally notice a decline in the rate of hair loss. Hair may start growing back after nine months of taking Propecia, but doctors recommend waiting a full year before evaluating how well the treatment works.

  • How does propecia work

    Propecia is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. 5-alpha reductase is an enzyme responsible for creating dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the sex hormone responsible for destroying hair follicles in certain individuals. DHT can gather in high concentrations in the scalp's tissue, which can prevent the hair follicles from reaching the blood supply via the dermal papillae. By preventing the 5-alpha reductase enzyme from converting testosterone into DHT, Propecia can lower the amount of DHT in the body, which prevents additional hair loss. It's important to note that this is only effective for those who are experiencing male pattern hair loss (MPH). Other forms of alopecia will not be affected.

Avodart

  • How long does it take for avodart to work

    Your prostate became large over a long period of time, reducing the size of your prostate and improving your symptoms will take time. While some men have fewer problems and symptoms after 3 months of treatment with Avodart, a treatment period of at least 6 months is usually necessary to see if Avodart will work for you. Studies have shown that treatment with Avodart for 2 years reduces the risk of complete blockage of urine flow and/or the need for surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia. There probably won't be much info on it and hairloss treatment as it will be buried in clinical trial data.

  • How does avodart work

    Avodart belongs to a class of medications known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. It is used to relieve symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with enlarged prostates. BPH is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that usually occurs in men after the age of 50. Avodart works to reduce the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes enlargement of the prostate gland. Avodart relieves symptoms of BPH by reducing the size of the prostate and improving the flow of urine. This medication improves symptoms associated with BPH, such as: decreased urine flow, difficulty urinating, getting up to urinate during the night, hesitation at the start of urination.

  • Side effects

    • sexual problems (such as decreased sexual ability, decrease in the amount of sperm released during sex);
    • impotence (trouble getting or keeping an erection);
    • testicle pain or swelling;
    • increased breast size, or breast tenderness;
    • hives and other severe skin allergic reactions;
    • heart failure;
    • dizziness.

Propecia gave some decent extra growth of hair, especially on the crown of the head. Ostensibly some on the front of the scalp, but hard to tell. Overall, it definitely has helped to preserve the hair I have (I have a twin brother who is effectively the control group, since he doesn't use such products, and he's getting pretty bald). Of the side effects there was a lowering of ability to achieve an erection, say 10-15% and a lowering of overall libido.

Was severely balding/thinning prior to taking it. Started on Propecia, and although it took a little while to work (at least half a year), I ended up regrowing a lot of hair. Switched to Proscar, hair grew back even more and thicker, hairline looks great now. Very minor side effects at the beginning, none since.

I have taken Avodart for BPH for about five or so years now. I have definitely experienced frontal hair growth and thickening as well. My last passport picture taken a few months ago shows me with thicker hair than the one taken over 10 years ago.

I have been taking Avodart for about two years now. It was prescribed because of an enlarged prostate which was affecting my ability to urinate. My stream is much improved.
