Celexa (citalopram) is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which work on neurotransmitters by increasing serotonin levels. Many medical experts believe depression is caused by an imbalance of neurotransmitters such as serotonin. Studies show there may be less serotonin in the brains of depressed people. Celexa is used to treat depression and also for treating: panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, premenstrual dysphoric syndrome, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder.

Sleep, appetite or energy may show some improvement within the first 1-4 weeks. Improvement in these physical symptoms can be an important early signal that the medication is working. Depressed mood and lack of interest in activities may need up to 6-8 weeks to fully improve.
Celexa is available as 10, 20, and 40mg coated tablets or as a liquid solution taken orally. Your doctor will likely prescribe a 20 mg dose of citalopram, taken once a day, to start. That dose could be increased gradually to 40 mg a day as you adjust to the medication. It can be taken with or without food. It is very important that Celexa pills be swallowed whole and not chewed, broken, or crushed.
Zoloft is the brand name of sertraline, an antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorders (post traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder). Zoloft is in a class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). They work by controlling levels of serotonin in the brain. Zoloft relieves symptoms of depression without the side effects that many people experience with the older tricyclic antidepressants and MAO inhibitors.

Although some symptoms (sleep, energy or appetite) may improve within a matter of days, it is important to allow four to six or even eight weeks for the medication to be fully effective. If no improvement is seen in two to four weeks, another medication can be tried.
Zoloft is administered once daily by mouth in the morning or evening:
I suffer from anxiety and insomnia. Being the age I am my doctor did not want to prescribe me anything that was just for sleep that could cause a dependence. She prescribed me Celexa at bedtime for the anxiety and due to the side effect drowsiness, that way I was able to get to sleep. I am know on the max dose and have been so happy, able to sleep and not feel so anxious. This pill has very minimal side effects and works wonders in a persons life.
I was prescribed Celexa for mild depression and anxiety. I was a pessimistic person too often, but around times like the holidays and wintertime, it was much worse. Depression was like a bottomless pit and it only took a simple memory or reminder to drag me down again. I've been on 10 mg of Celexa since Oct. 2, 2016 and I truly feel it has made me manage my moods so much better. Unrelated, I started a strict keto diet a few week later, dropped 20 lbs. and feel better than I have in more than 30 years (I'm 44). I recommend Celexa. The first two weeks felt like I could either faint or throw up, especially in the morning. If I were you, I'd stick it out; it does pass and you'll start to feel better around week three.
I had a very extreme reaction initially with frequent vomiting and diarrhoea, basically unable to keep anything down so had to come straight off it. Tried it again starting on a lower dose of 10mg which I increased to 20mg once I was settled, and also used Omeprazole to prevent sickness. Doing this helped me get started on Celexa with lessened side effects.
I'm 45 years old and have been on Zoloft for 20 years. I have slowly weaned myself off the drug over the last 12 months. It has now been 2 months without the drug. I am totally debilitated by brain fog, loss of memory, lack of concentration, and irritability. Can anyone please help me with might be happening to me or has anyone been through similar experiences to mine? I'm so upset everyday.... thanks!
I was on Zoloft for about 8 years for severe generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder. I was eventually maxed out (200mg) and I felt awful. I couldn't feel emotions at all, it was almost like depression but less hopeless. I felt like a zombie. Or a robot. I also had pretty severe sexual side effects as well. Got taken off, and I feel like a real human again. I'm on Wellbutrin now.
I was prescribed zoloft in the past and it worked well, so my doctor thought that we should try it again for my anxiety and depression. it worked very well in a short amount of time. it was worth the night sweats to have normal days.
