Aromasin vs Femara

  • Aromasin
  • What is Aromasin

Aromasin (Exemestane) is a prescription drug. It's used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is often given to women whose cancer has progressed even after taking tamoxifen (Soltamox, Nolvadex) for 2 to 3 years.

  • How does aromasin work

Many breast cancers are encouraged to grow by the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone. Aromasin blocks the effects of these hormones. With less oestrogen getting to the cancer cells they grow more slowly or stop growing altogether. When you reach the menopause, you no longer make oestrogen in your ovaries. But it is made in small amounts by turning other sex hormones called androgens into oestrogen.

  • Aromasin dosage

The recommended dose of Aromasin (exemestane) pills is 25 mg once daily after a meal. Treatment with Aromasin should continue until tumor progression is evident.

I have been taking Aromasin for 3 months now and still wake up every night in pain on my hand, tingling and burning along with joint pain.

I was put on Aromasin after 6 months on Tamoxifen because I suffered debilitating muscle cramps on Tamoxifen as well as joint problems and extreme hot flushes. Aromasin has been kinder, and so far I have taken it daily for 4 years out of an initial 5. It may be prescribed beyond 5 years, I'm not sure. It has relatively slight side effects now but in the first 6 months I was conscious of its effects on my body - not intolerable by any means, just noticable.

Femara worked great for me. I had many unsuccessful attempts with Chlomid, injectibles and two rounds of IVF. After many failed attempts and/of losses we conceived and carried full term with Femara!

After having a dr prescribe hormones for me for 12 yrs even tho I only had a partial hystromectomy I developed breast cancer. When it was found I was a advanced stage 3 with a tumor just short of a size 8,in my chest wall and left lymnodes. After massive chemo for 6 months it shrunk to a size 2, then came the double masectomy and nodes removed followed by 30 hits of heavy radiation. This all began in may of 2013 and now in October of 2015 in total remission. I am so thankful to my Drs et however the side effects of all of the treatments and continued treatment of Letrozole are awful. I feel 90 and have sudden bouts where I can't breathe and hurt all over. I hate it.
