Many breast cancers are encouraged to grow by the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone. Aromasin blocks the effects of these hormones. With less oestrogen getting to the cancer cells they grow more slowly or stop growing altogether. When you reach the menopause, you no longer make oestrogen in your ovaries. But it is made in small amounts by turning other sex hormones called androgens into oestrogen.
The recommended dose of Aromasin (exemestane) pills is 25 mg once daily after a meal. Treatment with Aromasin should continue until tumor progression is evident.
Arimidex (Anastrozole) is a prescription drug. It's used with other treatments, such as radiation or surgery, to treat early breast cancer in women who have experienced menopause (change of life; end of monthly menstrual periods).

Anastrozole is an aromatase inhibitor. This means it blocks the enzyme aromatase (found in the skin, body's muscle, breast and fat), which is used to convert androgens (hormones produced by the adrenal glands) into estrogens. Tumor cells dependent on estrogens grow less when there is no estrogen.
The dose of Arimidex is one 1 mg pill taken once a day. For patients with advanced breast cancer, Arimidex should be continued until tumor progression.
I have been taking Aromasin for 3 months now and still wake up every night in pain on my hand, tingling and burning along with joint pain.
I was put on Aromasin after 6 months on Tamoxifen because I suffered debilitating muscle cramps on Tamoxifen as well as joint problems and extreme hot flushes. Aromasin has been kinder, and so far I have taken it daily for 4 years out of an initial 5. It may be prescribed beyond 5 years, I'm not sure. It has relatively slight side effects now but in the first 6 months I was conscious of its effects on my body - not intolerable by any means, just noticable.
I have been taking Arimidex for 1.5 years. At first the only side affect I had was night sweats. Now I am wearing a wig as I have hair loss, my mouth is always dry, my eyes burn due to dry eyes, my knees hurt and I get weird sensations in my toes. Wondering if it is really helping enough to have these side effects.
I have been taking arimidex for 2 months. Within the first two weeks my osteoarthritis has deteriorated from tolerable to barely able to walk. I can not stand for long periods. My knees get stiff each time I sit. I have received a series if Ortho visc injections and am hoping for a miracle. I must keep working for insurance coverage. I have vision changes, chest and muscle pain, also. I have added fosamax due to the risk of calcium loss since I was diagnosed with osteopenia at the same time as stage 1 breast cancer. I am expertiencing more fatigue with arimidex than after radiation. I am not sure if I can tough this out for five years!
